According to "HIV,AIDS and children" website:
The figures below show the number of children (defined by UNAIDS as under-15s) directly affected by HIV and AIDS:
- At the end of 2007, there were 2 million children living with HIV around the world.
- An estimated 370,000 children became newly infected with HIV in 2007.
- Of the 2 million people who died of AIDS during 2007, more than one in seven were children. Every hour, around 31 children die as a result of AIDS(Berry, 2009).

Wow Kellie. It really amazes me that so many people, especially children, are becoming infected. I am still trying to grasp why it is happening if we are becoming more and more aware of this deadly virus. I know your blog said that these infection were around the world but did it give any specifics if more children were being newly infected in Australia versus the U.S.? This also makes me question if any HIV prevention is provided by any agencies or counselors to children who have a family member with HIV. I think I will look up your reference and see if it will answer some of my questions. Thanks for the information.
ReplyDeleteWOW! I can't believe that so many children have HIV. I guess I just have it made up in my mind that more adult contracted HIV and AIDS therefore the number of children getting infected should be slim to none. Then you said that 31 children die from this disease an hour! I read someone else's blog and she was talking about how adult women are 50% of the people infected with the HIV and AIDS. Something really has to be done this matter is extremely out of hand.
ReplyDeleteWhat is crazy about the whole thing is that fact that people infected with these disease still have babies everyday and their children are born with the disease. I am not saying that because you have HIV or AIDS that you should not have the opportunity to have children but when you think really hard about it, that is a hard decision to make. I work in the medical field and I have personally met children ages two through five who are infected with HIV or AIDS. The two in particular that I am talking about were brother and sister. Their parents were both positive because they abused drugs a long time ago. Although they have both been clean for ten or more years they still carry the disease of course and therefore when they decided to have a family they had to accept facts.
It is alarming to hear that so many children are infected. Although your statements are world wide statistics I am curious about the prominent regions where it is rampant among children. I believe that general education about HIV/AIDS would help bring the numbers down in many key areas. It is somber news to hear that 31 children die every hour due to the disease.
ReplyDeleteThis really breaks my heart. Anytime we talk about children and any disease I feel it is even more important to go the extra mile as they are so innocent! :(
